How to Wax a Car

Applying car wax

Waxing a car is very important because it not only gives the car a natural shine, but it also helps in protecting the paint from the environment. Basically, wax is a thin layer of protection that covers the paint. This layer works like sunscreen on humans, it protects the cars finish from the sun. Wax also covers up minor scratches and chips, making the paint finish look new again. Despite what you may hear on commercials, car wax does not last forever. In fact, most wax wears off within a few months. For the ultimate protection, it is recommended that you wax your car every three to four months. If you live in an area that has harsh weather, you may want to wax your car more often. Although waxing car may seem easy enough, this article will explain how to properly wax a car for the best results and protection.

Picking your wax

There are all-in-one waxes that are both a cleaner and a polish, or you can purchase a cleaner and a polish separately. There are also several different types of wax that offer different layers of protection. For a newer car and ease of use, most people choose the all-in-one wax. For longer lasting and deeper shine, you can also add a carnauba wax. You can also choose between a liquid wax or a paste.

Directions

You should find a shaded area that is protected from any direct sunlight. You will want to thoroughly wash the car. If the car is exceptionally dirty, you may want to wash it twice. You want to remove any loose dirt and bugs from the car’s finish. Once the car is washed and dried, you are now ready to wax the car.

The weather temperature will determine how much of the car you can wax at a time. To start off, apply the wax to one fender area and let it dry. Normally it only takes a few minutes for the wax to set up enough to wipe off. For best results you should use an even coat applicator. Any place that sells wax will also sell these applicators.

When you apply the car wax, you should use moderate pressure and apply the wax in a circular motion. A tip that makes waxing a car easier is to not apply a heavy coat of wax. Also, if you start waxing in the middle and then wax out toward the edge, it will prevent wax from getting into the spaces, such as the space between the hood and where the finder starts.

Once you have applied wax to an area of the car and it has dried, it time to wipe down the area. Using a clean soft towel, you can remove the dried wax in much of the same way that you put it on. Using moderate pressure, wipe in a circular direction until all of the dried wax is removed. Repeat these steps until the whole car is waxed. Once the car is waxed, you can look over the car and touch up any scratches that may need a little extra buffing. You can use a damp cloth to wipe off any wax that got onto the rubber gaskets around the widows.

Waxing a car normally takes about 30 to 45 minutes. The time spend is well worth it when you see your cars finish shine like new.
