How to Repaint Your Car
The state of your car paint is one aspect which makes it stand out among the rest. Over a period of time, due to cracking, flaking and regular usage your car paint can appear dull. This necessitates the repainting of the car. The manner in which you repaint the car, can give it a lively and elegant look. Repainting gives a car a new look. Repainting is usually a tedious, cumbersome task and at the same time, an expensive process too - making it a nonadjustable process on your budget.
With some amount of skill, you can do this process by yourself, should you so choose.
Materials and tools required:
- Cleaner
- Primer
- Paint sprayer
- Sand paper
- Body filler
- Replacement pieces if required
- Masking tape
- Wax and grease remove
Method:
Car repainting involves various steps right from the removal of the old paint up to providing the finishing touch to the car after painting. The various activities are as described in brief:
Paint removal :
In order to start the repainting process, it is very important that the old paint is stripped off completely. There are many methods like sand blasting, media blasting, chemical stripping, and power blasting which helps to remove the old paint from the car. Prior to initiation of this process, remove all the glass and rubber fixtures as well as the ones which do not require painting like bumpers, lights, door handles, grills etc. Further with the help of the sand paper – preferably of 120 or 200 grids – remove the remaining traces of the paint. This also will help to cover the scratches that have occurred on the car's surface due the paint removal and give a better surface finish. It is necessary that the old paint has been completely removed and the bare metal surface is smoothed properly so that the new paint can be applied uniformly.
Inspection:
Once the paint has been removed, the next important step involved is inspecting the cars surface for any dents, damaged areas, and to see whether any parts require repair or filling, etc. This is again important to give a uniform paint coating on the car's surface. If the car's surface is not leveled properly, it may result in over coating in some places and some surfaces may get undercoated if the dents are too deep.
Painting :
After having removed the existing paint and the leveled the surfaces, now the actual painting process starts. Start the painting process by spraying a good primer on the surface. This will help in adhering the paint to the car’s body surface. After the primer has dried, even the finish with sandpaper and then apply second coat of the primer to it and after this dries smooth the surface using 600 grain sandpaper. Remove the masking and wash the car’s surface to remove the dust. Remask the car and again wipe it off. Now spray the base coat using the spray gun. At this point you should remember that the spray gun should be held perpendicular to the surface you are painting and maintaining a distance of 10”-12” away from the surface. This ensures even coating. Finally, spray the top coat and let it dry.
