Why does your car rust?

Rusting occurs basically because of the damage to the finishing on the car. The rust tends to spread due to the oxidation process of the metal that has been exposed by a simple scratch or a small dent, to the air.

Safety

The very basic thing you need to consider is your own safety and hygiene when it comes to removing dust from your car. You should have your hand gloves, safety glasses and face masks to protect yourself from dust or any reaction caused during the removal of the rust.

Materials and tools

To remove the rust, you will need some paint tarp and a painters tape, sanding wheel along with few sheets of good quality sandpaper, and a small amount of rust acid compound on hand.

Getting started

Start covering the area of dent by taping around it with the painter’s tape which will not damage your car. Painter’s tape should be used over other types of tape because it will stay intact while the rust removal process is going on.

Shut the windows of your vehicles so that the dust does not get in. If dust particles enter the car you will end up with, more problems and scratches within. The first thing you have to do is concentrate on the thicker outer layer of the oxidized rust.

After the thick outer layer of rust is removed take the sandpaper sheets to get into the crannies. This will help you to get the rust out of the car. When the sanded surface gets smoother, wipe it and clean and then apply a thin coat of acid to the rusted area. Be sure that you don’t leave the compound on the exposed metal for too long a period.

After the acid is wiped off, gently clean the area with a new cotton cloth and mineral spirits, and allow the section to dry completely. Removing the rust from the car should be done before repainting it.
