Car painting
There are several techniques implemented for paint removal like sandblasting, media blasting, manual stripping, chemical stripping, power sanding and metal conditioning. Paint removal is a tedious as well as an expensive procedure. You should consider whether the activity is possible to be done by yourself or not. If the answer is yes, read on for further instructions as described below is the process involved in car paint removal.
Materials and tools required:
- Media blasting tool
- DA sander
- Sandpaper (may be 80, 120 or 200 grit)
- Air compressor
- Pneumatic air filer
- Sanding block
- Aircraft stripper
- Putty knife
- Gloves and protective clothing
Methods:
There are different methods to remove the car paint, listed below are a few among them. As many of these processes are carried out using materials which release harmful substances it is always recommended to wear protective clothing covering you entire body including eyes and nose before proceeding with the process.
Media blasting:
When using media blasting for paint removal, first remove the glass and rubber from the vehicle as this process has the tendency of damaging these. There are different types of media available like glass beads, baking soda, sand, etc. Choose the one that best suits your need. (Example if in case you want to remove the rust from the car body, baking soda is less useful in achieving this.) Fill this media in the media blasting tool and spray this on to the car at a consistent speed in order to remove the paint. This activity should be carried out in a well ventilated area as it generates a lot of heat.
Manual Stripping :
Manual stripping is done using a DA sander and sand paper. Alternatively, sanding blocks can also be used. Initiate the process by using DA sander to rough up the car followed by sandpaper of different grids. Initially start with 80 grid paper, which removes paint and gets the vehicle to bare metal, then follow with 120 and 200 grid papers to provide a finishing touch and ensure a smooth painting process.
Chemical Stripping :
Remove all the glass and rubber fixtures from the car before commencing with chemical stripping. Once done pour a sufficient amount of aircraft stripper on the surface where the paint needs to be removed and let the stripper stand for few minutes. This will cause the paint to lift which can later be scraped using putty knife. One to more application of the stripper may be generally required to strip off the paint completely. This can then be followed by sand paper to give a finishing touch.
Described above are only a few methods for paint removal. Car paint is the most important aspect to make your car look elegant and add to its resale value and thus requires removal and repainting at frequent time intervals.
