Car rims

If you are used to getting your minor auto repair jobs done by a professional, why not try to do it yourself and save some money? If you want your car rims painted, but have not done it before, give it a try by following some very simple instructions.

If you had already thought of getting this job done outside, you must have by now, decided in which color you would like to have your wheel rims painted. There are some lovely colors suitable for rims and you can choose what you think is best for your car. “Duplicolor” has a great selection to choose from, including white, classic silver, bronze and gunmetal.

The first thing you do is, sandpaper the rims of your car to roughen the surface to give the paint something to hold on to. Use sandpaper anywhere from 120 to 320 grit. When this is done, clean the sand dust completely and smooth it out with 600 grit sandpaper. You must make sure that you have a very clean surface to pain on as otherwise, the paint will not stick. Let it dry completely before going on to the next step.

Now you must cover your tires with newspaper by using masking tape to ensure that the paint does not get on to the tires. You will also have to protect the lip of the tire in the same way using masking tape. If you prefer however, you can remove the rim from the tire before you start the work. To protect the ground beneath the rims, its best that you place some more newspaper under the rims as well.

The next step is to add two coats of primer to the rims. Let the primer dry out completely before you sand it lightly with light grit sandpaper. Once this is done, remove all the sand, dust and grit from the rim. You must make sure that you clean your rim thoroughly to have it completely clean before you start to paint.

Now you can apply the first coat of paint to your rim. If you prefer a great deal of shine, you can apply a clear coat of shine while the first coat of paint is drying. Depending on the amount of shine you want, you can add another coat or two of shine, but beware; applying too many coats of shine might make it brittle resulting in chipping away the paint. As a final touch, you can use Carbona wax to give your rims even more luster and further protection.

If you have removed the rims from the tires before starting to paint, wait for the paint to dry completely before you put theme back on. Anyhow, it’s best that you let the wheels rest for at least a day or so before you dry away with your newly painted, good as new wheel rims.
