Stick Shift
Before you attempt to drive, you should first practice the shifting pattern. With the parking brake set and the engine turned off, you should go through the motion of shifting from gear to gear, making sure that you push in the clutch every time you shift. Practicing the motion of manual shifting will make things easier and less distracting later on.
If possible, it is highly suggested that you find an empty parking lot to learn the basics of driving a manual transmission. Now that you have practiced the use of the clutch and the shifting pattern, you are now ready to start the car. First, make sure that the parking break is set. To put the car into neutral, push the clutch down and then move the gear shift into neutral. In neutral, you will be able to move the gear shift from left to right freely. Push the clutch all the way down and start the engine. Once the car is running, very slowly release the clutch to ensure that it isn't in gear.
Now you are ready to move the car. If on a flat surface, it is best to start with the no gas method. Without using the gas pedal, slowly let up on the clutch with the car in first gear. Pay close attention to when the friction point begins. This is when the engine goes from an idle speed to a lugging speed as the transmission transfers power to the transfer case. The car will also start moving at this point. If you let the clutch out to fast, the car will buck forward and the engine will stall. Practice this no gas pedal method until you can successfully get the car to move forward smoothly. Believe it or not, that is the toughest part.
Now you are ready to add acceleration into the mix. As you slowly release the clutch, gently push on the gas pedal, just little bit. Once the car is moving, increase the RPM slightly and then push in the clutch, while the clutch is pushed in, move the gear shift into second gear, then slowly release the clutch as you give the car gas. If you do not get it right the first few times, don't feel bad. It takes practice. Once you are able to successfully shift through the gears without stalling, you are ready to hit the road.
When you want to stop the car, you will want to push the clutch in as you come to a stop. You can also down-shift when you want to slow down. When you want to down-shift, let off on the gas pedal to reduce the speed. Push in the clutch and then shift into the next lower gear. Slowly release the clutch without pressing on the gas pedal. You can continue down-shifting until you are ready to come to a complete stop.
